Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ's List

  • I have some 3D glasses from a realD theatre. Can I use them with Stereo3D Toolbox?
    • RealD glasses are circularly polarized. They only work with 3D projectors or monitors that output circularly polarized light, like the Hyundai S465D and JVC GD-463D10.  We support all passive polarized monitors via line-by-line, side-by-side or above/below output modes.

  • Will Stereo3D Toolbox work with parallel and toe-in footage?
    • Version 2 of Stereo3D Toolbox fully supports parallel stereoscopy and keystone compensation for converged toe-in adjustments.  Stereo3D Toolbox LE only supports parallel shooting and cannot compensate for keystone effects of toe-in convergence.

  • Do you have a Windows version of Stereo 3D Toolbox?
    • Sorry we don't have a Windows version.   However I think someone has taken our lead and created something similar for Sony Vegas.
  • Is Stereo3D Toolbox compatible with the latest version of Final Cut Studio?
    • Yes. Stereo3D Toolbox is compatible with Final Cut Studio 2 & 3. (FCP 6 or 7 & Motion 3 or 4)

  • How can I get the watermark removed? Will there be a trial version?
    • There won’t be a watermark-free trial version available. Instead we have revised the watermark to make it more discreet so that content created with the plugin will be viewable and you will have the freedom to use the plugin for free as long as the watermark is retained. We encourage users of the watermarked trial version to upload their videos to Vimeo, YouTube, DailyMotion, or your own personal websites. If you need the watermark removed then a license will need to be purchased from Noise Industries via FxFactory.

  • What software do you use to make your screencasts?
    • The software is called Screenflow. You can download it at http://www.telestream.net/screen-flow/overview.htm

  • Works great with S3D footage but what about CGI?
    • You can utilize the plugin in After Effect CS3 or CS4 with two separate 3D “cameras” in separate sub-comps. Tutorials describing this technique are coming soon. The plugin also works in Apple Motion but Motion is limited to outputting from only one camera so the functionality is limited to groups.

Stereo3D Toolbox 2 also features Z-Depth Map filter that accepts a 2D input and a Z-Depth Map input.

  • Can the plugin send the left eye and right eye to separate outputs?
    • No. Currently we can’t send any specific video to specific Kona or Blackmagic video cards but we are exploring this possibility. The plugin filter is sequence-dependent so unfortunately what you see is what you get. There are hardware solutions that can take a side-by-side or over/under output and demux it back to discreet left/right outputs for dual-projector support.

  • Can the plugin use Multi-angle clips as the left right sources in Final Cut Pro?
    • Unfortunately the FxPlug architecture doesn’t support using separate angles as inputs. Only the active angle can be used for input.

  • Can the plugin use VIdeo Layer 1 & 2 as the left right sources in FCP?
    • Unfortunately the FxPlug architecture doesn’t support looking down or up at other video layers in FCP. Clips from other layers can be dragged into the image well in the plugin filter but the filter will use the first frame of the source clip instead of the current frame in the timeline. There are ways around this using subclipping or nesting methods.

  • What is the best way to manage S3D editing? What about Neo3D?
    • If you have separate left and right clips we have a couple suggested workflows for FCP that will be posted soon but currently the most seamless solution is Cineform’s Neo3D, which syncs your separate Cineform quicktimes into single “paired” quicktimes. Neo3D can then be set to side by side or stacked and Stereo3D Toolbox can be used to fine tune your 3D shots from within FCP. Watch the Edit with Cineform® neo3d and master with Stereo3D Toolbox tutorial video.

  • Can you recommend a good stereoscopic 3D monitor?
    • We have tested both the Hyundai S465D and JVC GD-463D10 using the side-by-side mode. They both work well but the JVC seems to have the edge in picture quality. Both of these monitors use passive circular polarized glasses, just like the ones used in RealD theatres.

  • Does the plugin work with interleaved files made by Silicon DVR?
    • Now that Stereo3D Toolbox can use interlaced/interleaved files for input from any resolution you should be able to feed it 2K interleaved clips and set the input mode to INTERLACED.

  • Can I create an output to be screened at a realD theatre?
    • RealD uses a file formatted as a DCP “Digital Cinema Package.” This DCP is basically a JPEG2000 MXF video file that runs at 48fps and alternates frames left and right. The RealD hardware then feeds these frames to the projector in the correct sequence in sync with the polarizer attached to the projector.

Stereo3D Toolbox currently doesn’t directly support the creation of “page flipped” 3D files for DCP but you can output separate left and right TIFF image sequences for processing into a DCP with 5.1 surround sound.

  • Will the Stereo3D Toolbox support real-time playback?
    • It is difficult to get any third-party FxPlug filter to support full-resolution/full-frame-rate unrendered playback at HD resolutions, but as you can see in our tutorial videos it is possible to work with “Unlimited RT” and Dynamic framerate/resolution. The system we used for the tutorials is a base 2.26Ghz Octo-Core Mac Pro with the Nvidia GeForce GT120 with 512MB or VRAM.

Stereo3D Toolbox utilized VRAM and your graphics card for processing so if you are getting a “red bar” for rendering then your realtime performance may be affected by something in your system configuration... usually 3rd party video cards and drivers. You may also want to check that basic motion, crop, motion blur, etc are not activated on your source clip and that your codec and frame size of the sequence and source clips match. Please direct technical questions with regard to performance to support@noiseindustries.com

Stereo3D Toolbox only processes sections that are turned on. For example, you are only converting side-by-side into anaglyph then there will be no additional performance hit from convergence controls, autoscale or image controls unless they are in use.

  • How can I apply Stereo3D Toolbox to my whole sequence?
    • If you don’t need to individually adjust every clip in your sequence then you can “nest” the sequence into a new sequence and apply Stereo3D Toolbox just once. The easiest way to nest is to make a new empty sequence and then drag your edited sequence from the browser into the new sequence. Make sure you cleared your in and out points in your edited sequence before nesting.

  • Is it possible to offline at a lower resolution and then conform?
    • Yes it is possible if you use percentage-based sliders in Stereo3D Toolbox v2.0.  It is not possible in the "LE" version because the sliders only reference actual pixel shifts and will not scale to higher resolutions.

  • Is it possible to use keyboard keys to nudge the convergence?
    • Unfortunately no. The parameters are fully controlled by the host application and at the moment we cannot access the keyboard from the plugin.

  • What do the values on the sliders actually refer to?
    • The Stereo3D Toolbox LE pixel values indicated in “X/Y convergence” refer to the actual amount of pixels each eye is moved. Since the convergence and disparity sliders are "ping-pong" sliders a value of 1 means that the left eye was moved ½ pixel to the right and the right eye was moved ½ pixel to the left.

In Stereo3D Toolbox version 2 an additional option was added to switch the sliders from pixel-based to percentage based.  Course and fine controls also appear when percentage mode is selected.   For example a value of 1% on the convergence slider represents a ½% opposing horizontal shift of total horizontal width on each eye.

The Rotation sliders refer to degrees in a 4˚range (-2˚ to +2˚)

The scale controls refer to a multiplier based on 1. For example a value of 1 means no change in scale. A value of 1.10 means the image is 10% larger. A value of 0.90 means the image is now 90% of its original size.

Keystone values refer to rotation in degrees on the Y axis.

  • Does Stereo3D Toolbox support Autostereoscopic displays?
    • Stereo3D Toolbox does not yet support multi-view (ie: 3x3) autostereoscopic displays.  However most displays companies provide 2-view stereoscopic pair to 5 or 9 view conversion services.

  • How does the Global Output Mode work?
    • The idea behind the global output mode is that each of your clips in your sequence may have difference convergence adjustments, but you will be required to output multiple 3D formats and 2D versions. The solution is to use the Global Output Mode in all the clips after adjustments are made and then “set” the Global Output Mode in just one of the clips. The other clips will automatically switch to the same output mode and a new output can be made.

  • What about support for Avid Media Composer and its 3D modes?
    • An Avid version is in early development.

  • Why doesn’t this website have a forum for suggestions and help?
    • The official Stereo3D Toolbox forum is located at DV Info Net.

  • What about LOREO 3D LENS IN A CAP?
    • We added support for the Loreo3D Lens In A Cap in v1.0.2 by adding a switch to turn 2:1 squeeze on and off for the source input in side by side. Use “off” for Loreo3D Lens in a Cap.

  • Can Stereo3D Toolbox do 2D to 3D conversion?
    • The plugin does not automatically convert 2D to 3D.  However through careful rotoscoping a "depth map" can be created and fed into our Stereo3D Z-Depth Map filter to form a quasi stereoscopic scene.   The results of dimensionalization are never as good as actually acquiring stereoscopic views in production, but is sometimes the only way to solve problems created by too much interaxial separation.

  • Do I also need to buy FxFactory Pro to use your Stereo3D Toolbox plugins?
    • No you do not need to buy FxFactory Pro to use our plugins.  FxFactory is required to manage the plugins but it is free.  FxFactory Pro includes many plugins and transitions developed by Noise Industries and is also the software we used to design the user interface of Stereo3D Toolbox.

  • Is there an option for volume licensing or educational discounts?
    • We can provide volume and site licenses for 5 or more seats in one facility.   We will also consider educational discounts to accredited post-secondary institutions via their respective bookstore.  For more information please contact Niclas Bahn of Noise Industries.

  • Which graphics card do I need to run the plugins? Will my Macbook work?
    • All versions of Stereo3D Toolbox use the graphics card inside your Mac to provide accelerated previews and renders.

All ATI and NVIDIA graphics processors with at least 128MB of VRAM are supported. At least 512MB of VRAM is recommended for the best performance. Integrated Intel graphics processors are not supported.

Not sure what graphics card is installed in your system?

You can determine what graphics card is installed on your system by selecting the “About this Mac” command under the Apple menu. When the system summary appears, click the “More Info...” button, which will launch the System Profiler application. Graphics cards are listed under the “Graphics/Displays” section of the System Profiler.

  • Is there an upgrade option from the $99 "LE" to the full version of Stereo3D Toolbox?
    • No there is no upgrade option from Stereo3D Toolbox LE to Stereo3D Toolbox 2.  However licensees of Stereo3D Toolbox v1 will receive a an automatic free upgrade to v2 the next time they update FxFactory.
